Child Medicaid Disenrollment Data Shows Wide Variation in State Performance as Continuous Coverage Pandemic Protections Lifted
In response to the pandemic, states were temporarily required to keep people covered by Medicaid enrolled in exchange for enhanced federal funding. According to administrative data reported by the states to CMS, 4.16 million fewer children were enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) by December 2023 as the unwinding got underway.
